Puppy Chow, Muddy Buddies, Crack… whatever you call this concoction, it is tasty, easy to make, addictive, and gluten free!  Although I am not someone who lives a gluten free life style I do know a plethora of gluten free individuals. I find that when you enjoy baking for friends, co-workers, and people in general it isn’t easy to find something that everyone is able to eat.  Puppy Chow is something that everyone I have ever met loves and when given as a gift it is hard to resist stuffing your face with handfuls of this amazing treat!!! (note: if you have a nut allergy this recipe is not for you.)

There are only 5 ingredients to making this perfect mix: chocolate chips, peanut butter, butter, powdered sugar, and Chex cereal!  Some people use peanut butter chips instead of peanut butter itself but that’s a personal preference. So how much of all of these things will you need?? Let me tell you:

1 to 1 1/2 cups of Chocolate Chips (either semisweet or milk chocolate) This is about half a bag of chocolate chips or more depending on how chocolaty you like things I always tend to add more chocolate chips so that is why I say 1 to 1 1/2 cups.

1 cup of Creamy Peanut Butter. It does not matter which brand you use but I enjoy Peter Pan (Thanks Mom!)

1/4 cup of Butter (also known as half a stick of butter)

OPTIONAL 1 teaspoon of Vanilla. This will give your Puppy Chow sweet vanilla flavor along with he chocolate, peanut butter, and powdered sugar. So adding more sweetness is up to you!

1 Bag of Chex Cereal. When shopping for Chex I never remember if I should get rice or corn Chex so i always buy rice but I am sure any of their multitude of kinds and flavors would be tasty, especially their chocolate ones!

1 1/2 cups of Powdered Sugar (or more) When it comes to the powdered sugar it depends on how coated you want the cereal to be and how much sugar do you want at the bottom of the bag.

Step 1: Melt chocolate chips.  I prefer to use the double boiler method rather than a microwave, due to always burning chocolate in the microwave but it is up to you.  While melting your chocolate pour your Chex into a big bowl. The bigger the better since you will be mixing your chocolate mixture into the Chex and it can get messy if the bowl is too small.

Step 2: Once the chocolate is melted add in your peanut butter and butter until everything is incorporated.  If this does not happen with the microwave method you may have to heat the mixture up again until it is well mixed together.

Step 3: Once your chocolate, peanut butter, and butter is one tasty mixture you can add in your optional vanilla.

Step 4: Pour your chocolate mixture into your bowl of Chex and mix. Pieces are going to get broken up and not stay whole but that is 100% okay.

Step 5: Once the Chex is well covered pour it into a large plastic zip top type bag.

Step 6: Pour the powdered sugar over the chocolaty Chex mix, seal bag tightly, and shake excessively.

Step 7: After the excessive shaking the Puppy Chow should be done!  Open your zip top bag carefully, since the powdered sugar may fly out everywhere, and see how it looks!  If the mix has the amount of powdered sugar to your liking you are all done!  If you feel the mix could use more sugar add more, lock the bag, and shake once more.

Step 8: Eat the Puppy Chow!

And that is the simplicity of Puppy Chow, minimal ingredients, lots of sugar, all the yumminess!!  I hope you found this recipe easy to follow and the treats tasty!
